Depressing, gotta upgrade again. Reply to this review. Was this review helpful?(0) (0) Please Wait.
Steam Community : : Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Not only the story is unintriguing this time around, it ends with a cliffhanger. There is a good chance there will be no remedy in DLC's either.
Deus Ex: Invisible War Cheat Codes ?
It smells like a huge bet on a sequel). Distinctive locations all around the globe. Gameplay- wise it's a polished version of DE: HR, which was polished enough in its own right. And while there is nothing wrong with such gameplay per se, I personally have a gripe with difficulty.
Yes, they've added an Iron Man mode, but that's a different kind of beast meant for second+ playthroughs. What I mean is that when I play on hardest available difficulty, I expect the game to be at least somewhat challenging. Addition of new augments made the game extremely trivial.
If let's say in HR, in order to non- lethaly clear a room with 4 targets while avoding the alarm you had to resort to gas grenades/mines and grouping your enemies in some way, here you've got a no- brainer augment that locks onto all 4 targets from across the room and quietly puts them to simultaneous sleep. So the only way to create challenge is to artificially limit yourself in augemt choices. No dash, no cloak, no tesla, no x- ray vision - this sort of non- lethal playthrough might actually be entertaining. Sadly I'll never know, because game leaves zero reason to play through it again.
Story is a complete mess. It gets interesting for a very short period of time when .
Not to spoil anything story- wise, the biggest problem in narrative department is probably Adam Jensen himself. Unlike DE: HR, here he has zero character development. His motivation is nonexistant. In first game dude was brought back from the brink of death, lost his girlfriend, was struggling with getting used to his new augmented self, had a strong motivation to pursue the attackers, as it was him, head of security at Sarif, who failed at his job of protecting the facility.
After finding out that Megan was alive, stakes went even higher for Adam. All that drive is in the past. In MD Adam literally just wakes up in the morning and goes to job. He also has this side job thing going on, that sometimes interferes with his actual work. Regardless of decisions you make throughout the game, Adam in the end of MD will be exactly the same person he was in the beginning of MD. Finally - the location diversity. In DE: MD we've got one opening mission in unfinished hotel building in Dubai, one in the slums of the .
Rest (read the majority) of the action takes place in Prague, which they did not manage to sew into one location, so you'll enjoy quite a few loading screens while exploring the city. Not only this lack of diversity makes game less memorable, it also makes it incredibly short. My 4. 2 hours in game include non- lethat approach, avoiding any alarms, turning every stone I could find (reading every email/newspaper/pocket secretary) while also spending around 4- 5 hours in breach mode. A regular, relaxed playthrough with minimum save- loads on normal difficulty should take around 2.
Speaking of breach mode - it's surprisingly well built for a side- activity. While I found artstyle quite uninspiring, I suppose quite a few people might enjoy the ability to test out whole weapon\cybernetic arsenal (somewhat expanded compared to the main game even !) in non- story driven environment. Preorder mission that you can't access during the campaign using your actual character - is just a spit in customers face. You have to start it from main menu. Lasts for another hour tops, takes place (surpise!) yet again in Prague. I'd take any bet arguing that this mission was originally just a regular sidequest that some genius in marketing department decided to gut from the main experience and use as a tool to boost their preorder sales.
All- in- all, this would be a good game if it weren't for DE name. Hell, it could almost be a decent DE game if not for what HR managed to achieve. But HR showed us that DE is not dead, so naturally, we wanted more and we wanted (at the very least) the same quality. Sadly, Eidos failed to deliver both.
